Roy Lichtenstein - History in the Making, 1948-1960
Description:
Roy Lichtenstein: History in the Making, 1948-1960 is the first major museum exhibition to investigate the early work of a major 20th-century American artist. Colby College Museum of Art and Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University are joining forces to present 90 pieces from the artist's fruitful and formative initial career, most never before seen by the public. Paintings, drawings, sculptures, and prints will give a glimpse into the artist's visually-driven inclinations, channelling sources from every corner with a judicious glare. This served as the underappreciated springboard for Lichtenstein's later dive into comic books and advertisements--all before his 1961 pivot to Pop Art! Abstraction, too, was a topic of interest, as the artist toed the line between buoyant lyricism and a droll snarkiness towards Abstract Expressionism.
